What's New in the Nursery for September:

Lots of fresh plants for your garden! We're gearing up for fall and bringing in heaps of plants in all categories. Here's the breakdown with highlights:  Plenty of foundation shrubs like dwarf Japanese hollies, laurels, Indian hawthorns, and gardenias. Evergreen screening plants like Chindo viburnum and tree hollies. These huge 'Festive' red hollies are ready to create some instant landscape! They won't take over the joint (only getting about 20 feet tall) and they produce loads of red berries.

Plenty of flowering trees and shrubs coming in: You'll find flowering cherries, plums, redbuds, and dogwoods. NEW this fall is 'Celestial Shadow' dogwood, a tough hybrid with white flowers and variegated, golden-edged leaves. It's sun tolerant, too!

We've got a fresh shipments of shrubs such as butterfly bushes, dwarf shrub crepe myrtles, and weigela including this cool newbie: 'Champagne & Strawberries' weigela. Lovely wavy leaves feature light green and cream and have a lightly speckled fizzy look. Red flowers with purple undertones bring to mind crushed strawberries.

We've also gotten in the uber popular Knock Out roses, so get 'em while they're hot. We've Pink Knock Out and Original Knock Out and the Double Pink and Double Red Knock Out are coming this week.

Lots of conifers coming in from one of our favorite conifer growers, Iseli Nursery. This is where we get most of our cool collector stuff and finely funky fir-like specimens.

Love the elegant form and rich foliage of Japanese maples? Come and get first dibs off the early September delivery truck! Japanese maples are tough to beat for fall color, exquisite leaves, and they definitely win the prize for Best Looking In Winter With Christmas Tree Lights Wrapped Around the Branches.

What's Growing On in the Greenhouse for September:
Fat and sassy Homewood-grown garden mums are starting to strut into the nursery. It's hard to beat garden mums for seasonal color and "flavor". They're so versatile and are great in containers, flowerbeds, and mixed container gardens.

Pansies are another main staple of not just fall color but winter and spring, too. They'll be debuting shortly but don't get too anxious to plant them until it cools down a little in September. Pansies may look hot but they don't like it the weather that way!

Time to plants starts of cool season veggies and get growing on all those dark leafy greens the doctors tell you to eat in such large quantities. We'll have broccoli, cauliflower, and brussell sprouts, as well as head lettuce, collards, and leeks.

There's still time to grow some herbs for fall. Parsley, chives, and cilantro actually do better when it cools down a bit. You can also get started on some herbs for Thanksgiving dinner. How good is that turkey stuffing gonna be when it's made with fresh thyme, tarragon, or sage? REALLY good!
